Ok so my lesson yesterday was on the Attitudes of our Divine Roles. In preparing I saw an idea to make pictures of rolls and label them all the different roles women have. But I thought cinnamon rolls would be so much better. So I found pictures and decided I would make cinnamon rolls to share with my girls. (side note here as I can't make bread at all not even in a bread maker so why I thought I could make cinnamon rolls is beyond me but I had all the ingredience!) Katlynne kept Rebekah and Kisiah happy while I measured and got it all in the bread maker and set to make the dough. I was a little distracted so I hoped I got the right amount of flour in. Well when the timer went off that it was ready I looked in to find dough that wouldn't even stick together. My first thought was to run to the store and buy the premade ones that I could just bake. But we are trying to be frugule so I decided I would try again when the little ones went to bed. Bart was working late at the temple so at ten I started my new batch. I measured carefully as I knew this was the reason they didn't turn out right. One hour and twenty minutes later I opened the bread maker to find the same result. I couldn't believe it. But I was not about ready to give up...oh no I was making cinnamon rolls! Too late to go the store so I added some water to get the dough to stick and rolled it as thin as I culd get. Poured the butter and spices on the top and rolled it shut. I got out my fishing line that I use for sewing to cut the rolls apart. As I cut the first one it broke the line before it even went very far! Plus the butter and spices were spilling out quickly so I threw the whole thing in the pan and used a knife and sort of cut/pulled them apart. In to the oven they went and I sat down to figure out what went wrong and how I could relate this to my lesson all the while hoping for a miracle when timer went off:) I couldn't let these girls know I can't cook! I had all the right ingredience so what went wrong? (Yes I have subsittuted before and not a pretty picture.) So what if my yeast was old, that wouldn't matter so much would it? As they cooked I pondered. They smelled wonderful so I hoped they would work out great after all. Well needless to say when the rolls came out of the oven there they were...not so small as before but not the big scrumptious ones that get your mouth watering. I decided to pour frosting on them and see what they were like in the morning. For breakfast I tried one and they were not so bad. Tasted a lot like bread with a little bit of cinnamon but really dry. I wrapped up some for the young women and went to church. What my pondering came up with was...we all have the same divine ingredience. Some of us keep those fresh and some put them on the shelf for sometime later, praying they'll be a miracle. We can be very yummy beautiful cinnamon rolls that anyone would love to have or we can be just alright and even a little dry. If I were to go to the store and buy them, or replace my divine qualities with worldly things, they would be full of artificial ingredience and not natural. Now my Laurels are very quiet and don't participate much. I shared this with my them and they discussed freely their views of their divine roles. I was happy! And even after I gave them the disclaimer on the cinnamon rolls they each took one home. After all church is so long and they get hungry!!! I think it helped them to see that they still had to use their divine qualities now and not just wait till they someday marry and have kids. That it wasn't a chore but a blessing. So maybe I could have made beautiful cinnamon rolls but my girls needed a different lesson....ha ha. I'l be practicing my baking skills a little more.

Isn't it amazing how our Heavenly Father always sends "sugar" with the lemons. When we are open to the Spirit life lessons take on such a different meaning. Heather, your young women are blessed to have such a sensitive leader. So glad Kate will be with you in two weeks :) Luv, l/m

I have a pie story...ha ha. Just ask Doug. I think it is wonderful how you didn't give up and you used what turned out to teach the girls.

What a good lesson! Good job for sticking to making them from scratch, I probably would have given up.

You're so awesome, Heather! Our Young Women are so blessed to have you. And the next time you have extra "bad" baking you need to get rid of, I'll volunteer for the job...it doesn't sound too bad!

What a great lesson. There is a reason you never get out of YW. You were born to teach them. Love the picture of Kisiah on the side.

What a great lesson. I might use it. I think we are behind because we just had ward conference. You are so talented to come up with that analogy. Thanks for sharing.

That IS a great lesson. I'm impressed that you could make something so positive from something so potentially frustrating! We miss the awesome Hedrick family! :)
